Skater Spotlight

Meet our featured CRD girl of the month

27 Sugar Hits

It’s the most wonderful time of year! That’s right it is not only the festive season but the 2nd Roller Derby World Cup is taking place in Dallas RIGHT NOW! To celebrate, our skater spotlight for December is the lovely Sugar Hits. On the rise to jammer stardom with Vice Squad, Sugar is fitter than YOU, bakes amazing cakes and a CRD calendar girl for 2015.

1. Hello Sugar Hits. Where in the fresh hell are you from?

I’m from the lovely lands of West Wickham It’s full of old people.

2. How long have you been skating with CRD?

I started in Feb 2011, but after 6 months or so life got in the way and I needed to take a break. I re-joined in Feb 2013 and have come back harder and stronger (hopefully)!

3. Do you have a pre-bout preparation ritual?

I can’t function without a cup of tea, so that’s in there. Other than that I get a lot of nervous energy and jump about everywhere.

4. What’s your current skate set-up?

I’m on Hybrid Bonts with Crazy Apollo plates. I currently use 91a wheels, but have asked Santa for some 93a Atom Jukes for Christmas.

5. What have been your standout, all-time favourite moments from your CRD career?

It’s probably going to have to be the Portsmouth game. It was my first game on the jammer rotation and even though my coaches had told me I was a good jammer I didn’t really believe in myself. On one of my jams I hopped through the inside line (my blockers had kindly cleared it for me) and it must’ve looked like an apex jump because loads of people cheered and when I got back to the bench my teammates told me how awesome it was. After that I realised that I’m actually not too shabby.

6. What are your goals for the future in your skating career?

robably the same as everyone else on Vice Squad. I want to be one of the big girls on Riot Squad!

7. Which skaters inspire you?

I love how Vikispeedia skates. She’s got amazing footwork so I watch her feet in the hopes that it might help me improve mine. And I’m probably jumping on the bandwagon, but after watching the Champs I am completely in love with Loren Mutch. That girl is good.

8. Which non-skaters inspire you?

It’s a bit lame, but my mum inspires me. She went to uni when she was 27, so I think that if she can do it then I can too. I might not have taken the leap if it wasn’t for her.

9. What do you do when you’re not skating?

I’m in my first year studying for a degree in Human Nutrition & Exercise Science, so most of my time is spent either at uni or doing uni work. It’s tough, but I’m loving it so far!

10. Do you have a party trick?

Unsure if it counts as a party trick, but I bake a mean cupcake. It’s my goal in life to fatten CRD up.

11. Are you a lover or a fighter?

I try to be a lover, but I can get feisty when I need to!
