We’re recruiting! Join us for tryouts on July 15th!

Rookie Tryouts 15th July

CRD are recruiting and we want you! On Friday 15th July we’re hosting our second recruitment day of 2016 and we’re on the lookout for skaters, referees and non-skating officials (NSOs) to come join our amazing league. Complete newbies are welcome as are seasoned skaters, so come along and give it a try.

Never skated before? Not a problem. We’ll give you all the beginner derby skills you need, from falling safely to stopping, transitions and skating backwards. Plus, we’ll build up your knowledge of the game and rules meaning you’ll soon know your packs from your penalties.

Tryouts take place from 7pm to 9pm with a combination of off-skates and on-skates activities, to give you a taste of what training at CRD will be like.

The Rookie Diary | Three easy upgrades for your basic roller skates

When you’ve been in rookies a few months, it’s inevitable you’ll want to upgrade parts of your kit.

Our coaches regularly warn us not to spend too much time or money on new stuff just yet as, at our level, we need to master the basics before new wheels or other bits will have a major impact.

And it’s true: there’s no point in getting custom skates, for example, if you can’t do anything on them. But the lure of all the shiny plates, glittering toe stops and sparkly bearings in Double Threat is too strong to resist. At some point almost all of us rookies have upgraded our kit in one way or another.

These are the three changes I’ve made to my skates since I started six months ago which may give a boost to any new derby player.

The Rookie Diary | Finding our inner skater

As Croydon Roller Derby rookies (and, in the real world, somewhat reputable journalists) the task of writing the new rookie diary has predictably fallen to Amy North and myself Robyn Vinter.

Every week we’ll attempt to condense our wins, our fails, our transitions – literally and figuratively – and our hard-earned bruises into fascinating blog posts, all while writing in the first-person (something that’s actually surprisingly difficult for a journalist).

Riot rising up the ranks in 2014

Without a doubt, 2014 has been Riot Squad’s most exciting year yet. We sent skaters and refs to the World Cup in Dallas, Texas; we had our new intake of rookies, all of whom look set to conquer the world; and finally, most excitingly, we earned our place as one of the Top 20 ranked teams in Europe.

Calendar Girl

Who are you?
Toxic Frosting, I play for Vice Squad and have been skating with CRD since August 2013.

What’s so special about the Body Canvas calendar?
It’s tasteful and artistic and really think it adds something new to market of nude / roller derby calendars.
