This is what it’s like to go from being the shakiest rookie to joining the B team – and you can do it too

Nuclear Vinter, one of Croydon’s newest B team skaters, explains

There are no doubt some people who are thinking of coming along to our recruitment evening who have no skating skills and are wondering whether they could really learn to play roller derby.

A year ago, I was one of those people so I thought I’d share my experience with the hope of encouraging y’all to come along, meet us and find out more.

When I first started, I could barely stand on my skates. I couldn’t stop or even fall safely (I had the broken tailbone to prove it) and I honestly didn’t know whether someone like me could even become a roller derby player. I did virtually zero exercise and hadn’t been much of a sportsperson ever in my life before, so the thought of taking up something new and competitive was intimidating.

But with the help of the amazing coaches, my new rookie friends and the rest of the league, I have (almost) mastered the basic skills you need to play the game. I’m so much fitter and have lost nearly two stone – not from the skating sessions themselves, but from being inspired to haul ass to the gym to get better at roller derby – something previously alien to me.

I got incredible support from the other CRD girls, but in return I had to bring a hell of a lot of commitment, perseverance, focus and determination. Of course, I’ve only just started B team training, so I’ve got a great deal of hard work and learning ahead. However, I want to encourage anyone who isn’t sure they’ve got what it takes to just come along and see what we’re all about. I did it, and so can you.

Our recruitment evening is tonight! Come along!
